Wa-ith qalat ommatun minhumlima taAAithoona qawman Allahu muhlikuhum awmuAAaththibuhum AAathaban shadeedan qaloomaAAthiratan ila rabbikum walaAAallahum yattaqoona وإذ قالت أمة منهم لم تعظون قوما الله مهلكهم أو معذبهم عذابا شديدا قالوا معذرة إلى ربكم ولعلهم يتقون
وَإِذْ قَالَتْ أُمَّةٌ مِّنْهُمْ لِمَ تَعِظُونَ قَوْمًا اللّهُ مُهْلِكُهُمْ أَوْ مُعَذِّبُهُمْ عَذَابًا شَدِيدًا قَالُواْ مَعْذِرَةً إِلَى رَبِّكُمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَّقُونَ

  اور جب ان میں سے ایک گروہ نے (فریضۂ دعوت انجام دینے والوں سے) کہا کہ تم ایسے لوگوں کو نصیحت کیوں کر رہے ہو جنہیں اللہ ہلاک کرنے والا ہے یا جنہیں نہایت سخت عذاب دینے والا ہے؟ تو انہوں نے جواب دیا کہ تمہارے رب کے حضور (اپنی) معذرت پیش کرنے کے لئے اور اس لئے (بھی) کہ شاید وہ پرہیزگار بن جائیں

Ahmed Aliاور جب ان میں سے ایک جماعت نے کہا ان لوگوں کو کیوں نصیحت کرتے ہو جنہیں الله ہلاک کرنے والا ہے انہیں سخت عذاب دینے والا ہے انہوں نے کہا تمہارے رب کے روبر عذر کرنے کے لیے اور شاید کہ یہ ڈر جائیں

Shabbir Ahmed اور جب (ان سے) کہا ایک گروہ نے انہی میں سے کہ کیوں نصیحت کرتے ہو تم ایسے لوگوں کو جنہیں اللہ ہلاک کرنے والا ہے یا عذاب دینے والا ہے انہیں، سخت ترین عذاب۔ تو انہوں نے کہا اس لیے کہ ہم معذرت پیش کرسکیں تمہارے رب کے حضور اور اس لیے کہ شاید وہ (نافرمانی سے) پرہیز کرنے لگیں۔

Abul Ala Maududiاور انہیں یہ بھی یاد لاؤ کہ جب اُن میں سے ایک گروہ نے دوسرے گروہ سے کہا تھا کہ "تم ایسے لوگوں کو کیوں نصیحت کرتے ہو جنہیں اللہ ہلاک کرنے والا یا سخت سزا دینے والا ہے " تو انہوں نے جواب دیا تھا کہ "ہم یہ سب کچھ تمہارے رب کے حضور اپنی معذرت پیش کرنے کے لیے کرتے ہیں اور اس امید پر کرتے ہیں کہ شاید یہ لوگ اس کی نافرمانی سے پرہیز کرنے لگیں"

ShakirAnd when a party of them said: Why do you admonish a with a severe chastisement? They said: To be free from blame before your Lord, and that haply they may guard (against evil).
SarwarWhen a group of them questioned another group saying, "Why do you preach to those whom God has decided to destroy or punish by a severe torment?" they replied, "We preach to them for we are responsible in the sight of your Lord and so that perhaps they may have fear of God."

MalikAlso remind them about the conversation among some of them, when some of them asked: "Why do you admonish a people whom Allah will destroy or sternly punish?" They replied: "To be able to offer an excuse before our Lord that we did discharge our duty, and also in the hope that they may refrain from His disobedience."[164]
