| بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ |
| 1. [4:153] | Yas-aluka ahlu alkitabi an tunazzilaAAalayhim kitaban mina alssama-i faqadsaaloo moosa akbara min thalika faqaloo arinaAllaha jahratan faakhathat-humu alssaAAiqatubithulmihim thumma ittakhathoo alAAijla minbaAAdi ma jaat-humu albayyinatu faAAafawnaAAan thalika waatayna moosa sultananmubeenan |  يسألك أهل الكتاب أن تنزل عليهم كتابا من السماء فقد سألوا موسى أكبر من ذلك فقالوا أرنا الله جهرة فأخذتهم الصاعقة بظلمهم ثم اتخذوا العجل من بعد ما جاءتهم البينات فعفونا عن ذلك وآتينا موسى سلطانا مبينايَسْأَلُكَ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ أَن تُنَزِّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ كِتَابًا مِّنَ السَّمَاءِ فَقَدْ سَأَلُواْ مُوسَى أَكْبَرَ مِن ذَلِكَ فَقَالُواْ أَرِنَا اللّهَ جَهْرَةً فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّاعِقَةُ بِظُلْمِهِمْ ثُمَّ اتَّخَذُواْ الْعِجْلَ مِن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَتْهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ فَعَفَوْنَا عَن ذَلِكَ وَآتَيْنَا مُوسَى سُلْطَانًا مُّبِينًا | |||||

| Tahir ul Qadri | (اے حبیب!) آپ سے اہلِ کتاب سوال کرتے ہیں کہ آپ ان پر آسمان سے (ایک ہی دفعہ پوری لکھی ہوئی) کوئی کتاب اتار لائیں، تو وہ موسٰی (علیہ السلام) سے اس سے بھی بڑا سوال کر چکے ہیں، انہوں نے کہا تھا کہ ہمیں اﷲ (کی ذات) کھلم کھلا دکھا دو، پس ان کے (اس) ظلم (یعنی گستاخانہ سوال) کی وجہ سے انہیں آسمانی بجلی نے آپکڑا (جس کے باعث وہ مرگئے، پھر موسٰی علیہ السلام کی دعا سے زندہ ہوئے)، پھر انہوں نے بچھڑے کو (اپنا معبود) بنا لیا اس کے بعد کہ ان کے پاس (حق کی نشاندہی کرنے والی) واضح نشانیاں آچکی تھیں، پھر ہم نے اس (جرم) سے بھی درگزر کیا اور ہم نے موسٰی (علیہ السلام) کو (ان پر) واضح غلبہ عطا فرمایا | ||||||
| Yousuf Ali | The people of the Book ask thee to cause a book to descend to them from heaven: Indeed they asked Moses for an even greater (miracle), for they said: "Show us Allah in public," but they were dazed for their presumption, with thunder and lightning. Yet they worshipped the calf even after clear signs had come to them; even so we forgave them; and gave Moses manifest proofs of authority.

| Ahmed Raza Khan | اے محبوب! اہل کتاب تم سے سوال کرتے ہیں کہ ان پر آسمان سے ایک کتاب اتاردو تو وہ تو موسیٰ سے اس سے بھی بڑا سوال کرچکے کہ بولے ہمیں ا لله کو اعلانیہ دکھادو تو انہیں کڑک نے آ لیا ان کے گناہوں پر پھر بچھڑا لے بیٹھے بعداس کے لئے روشن آیتیں ان کے پاس آچکیں تو ہم نے یہ معاف فرمادیا اور ہم نے موسیٰ کو روشن غلبہ دیا | ||||||
| Shabbir Ahmed | مطالبہ کرتے ہیں تم سے (اے پیغمبر!) اہلِ کتاب کہ نازل کراؤ ان پر کوئی کتاب آسمان سے (کچھ عجب نہیں) کہ مطالبہ کرچُکے ہیں یہ لوگ موسیٰ سے، اس سے بھی بڑا چنانچہ انہوں نے کہا تھا کہ دکھا تو ہم کو اللہ کُھلم کُھلا سا آلیا اُن کو بجلی نے اُن کے ظلم کے سبب۔ پھر پُوجنا شروع کردیا اُنہوںنے بچھڑے کو اس کے بعد بھی کہ آچُکی تھیں اُن کے پاس کھلی نشانیاں لیکن معاف کردیا ہم نے اس کو بھی اور عطا کیا ہم نے موسیٰ کو کُھلا غلبہ۔ | ||||||
| Fateh Muhammad Jalandhary | (اے محمدﷺ) اہل کتاب تم سے درخواست کرتے ہیں کہ تم ان پر ایک (لکھی ہوئی) کتاب آسمان سے اتار لاؤ تو یہ موسیٰ سے اس سے بھی بڑی بڑی درخواستیں کرچکے ہیں (ان سے) کہتے تھے ہمیں خدا ظاہر (یعنی آنکھوں سے) دکھا دو سو ان کے گناہ کی وجہ سے ان کو بجلی نے آپکڑا۔ پھر کھلی نشانیاں آئے پیچھے بچھڑے کو (معبود) بنا بیٹھے تو اس سے بھی ہم نے درگزر کی۔ اور موسیٰ کو صریح غلبہ دیا | ||||||

And their psyche was such that when a bolt of lightning struck around them, they fell in fear (2:55). They had displaced the true belief with falsehood. After that, they chose the calf for worship although they had seen the Manifest Truth. Yet, We pardoned them and gave Moses evident authority (as a blessing for their guidance). | ||||||
